Psychology as a Science Due Date: Day 2 Week 1 Tuesday August 31, Where: Main Forum Word Count: Consider the statement Psychology has a long past but a short history.
What do you think this means? In your opinion, which person or perspective has had the most influence on the growth of psychology?
I believe that when it is said that psychology has a long past but a short history it means that psychology has always been around, since the beginning of mankind because everyone has always wanted to know about human behavior and mental processes, but it has a short history because it was not until a little while back when people or should I say scientist actually started studying human behavior and calling it psychology.
I feel this way because even though people wanted to know about human behavior and mental processing no one actually believed that there was a way to know about human behavior and should I say give certain behaviors kind of a stereotype. I feel that William James was very important to the growth of psychology because he one of the first academics to challenge structuralism.
I picked him over the others because William James made a change to the world and decided to share the information he knew with people so they too could be educated. InJames offered a class in psychology at Harvard.
He later commented that the first lecture he ever heard on the subject was his own. An Introduction 12th ed. Week 1 Discussion Question 2 Topic: How do you think gender, race, and ethnicity have affected your behavior? Provide an example from your life where you have observed people from different ethnic backgrounds or genders behaving differently in the same situation.
All normal human beings have the same sense organs and perceptual capacity. Yet our individualityour motivations, values, expectations, cognitive style, and cultural preconceptionsinfluences what we perceive.
Males are normally more aggressive than females this can be the cause of higher testosterone levels in males then in females.
Or it could be seen that males are more aggressive because of society. Boys are suppose to be tuff and strong. When sports are being played it seems that when there is any type of fights it is normally males. I feel that race can affect a persons behavior because of the culture that they may have grown up in due to their race.
For example, an Asian woman in most norms is more quiet on voicing her opinion. This could be because of the fact that it is taught that in their race Asians must be more agreeable to men. Also if you look at like mixed children it sometimes is seen that maybe they are either stronger or weaker than most and that could play a role on the fact of not knowing who they are and what race to follow because sometimes it is hard to follow more than one race.
Mixed persons may have to fight for their spot or just stay weak. Ethnicity could affect behavior because of the culture in which the persons perceives themselves to be. Ethnicity can kind of be connected in the fact of behavior when compared to race.
I know for example some black persons mostly older are still kind of fighting history with slavery and in that situation the blacks maybe more prone to act out to whites or feel they have to stand their ground and fight for what they have.
I know I have watched a situation to where a preachers daughter in my school and another girl in my school got upset with each other over a rumor about something.
The preachers daughter was a young white girl and the other girl was a young Mexican American. When the argument started it pretty much finished with the preachers daughter turning her back on the other girl and saying god bless you.
I would think that the fact that the girl is a preachers daughter and grew up in a strong god driven environment would be why she turned away. Now on the other hand I have seen two girls get into it in my school before about a rumor also.
One girl was white and the other was Mexican American and well no body turned away it ended up in a big roll around cat fight in the hallway.CheckPoint Psychological Disorders Presentation - Free download as Powerpoint Presentation .ppt /.pptx), PDF File .pdf), Text File .txt) or view presentation slides online.
